DAILY LIFE

What is this woman wearing?

She wears a huge apron, which she presumably put on to protect her dress while bathing or holding the baby. Trade cards sometimes show practical, domestic garments that almost never appear in the formal, posed photographs of the 1800s. This card also gives a full-colour view of the room's decorating scheme, with its dark wood panelling, richly coloured wallpaper, and elaborate picture frame.

How realistic is this scene?
