What other similarities exist among the three cards showing invalids (Ayer's Sarsaparilla, Parker's Tonic, and Carter's Iron Pills)?
For one thing, all the invalids are women. Among all the trade cards in the museum's collection, there are no cards showing a man in bed or reclining by the fireside in a state of debilitating illness. Even when men are shown as ill, they are still fully dressed and up and about their business.
Secondly, although each of these three cards uses a very different style of art, they all present the scene in the same way. The healthy friend is to the right, and "talks down" to the invalid on the left.
What kind of "invalid steroetypes" have you noticed in modern advertising?
