The Museum of Health Care is seeking two returning full-time undergraduate Queen’s University students for the position of Public Programs Assistant for the period of May to August 2010 as part of the Queen’s Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP). To be eligible to apply for SWEP positions applicants must be:

  • Currently registered in a Queen's undergraduate degree program, full-time; AND
  • Returning to a Queen's undergraduate degree program full-time the subsequent Fall Term.

Job Description:
Working in collaboration with other Visitor Services staff (supervised by the Museum Manager), the Public Programs Assistant will:
  • Deliver in-Museum educational programs for grades K-12 and university classes, adult education programs, and summer day camps.
  • Research and develop new activities and public programs to expand in-Museum programming
  • Assist in the development of customized program/tour options for specific groups.
  • Conduct guided tours of the Museum of Health Care’s five onsite galleries, the Kingston General Hospital National Historic Site, and the Outreach Galleries in Kingston General Hospital’s Hall of Honour in a manner that engages and delights participants, while conveying the requisite information.
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of events for adults including free lectures and film screenings.
  • Market in-Museum programs and guided tours within the framework of an existing marketing plan, including targeted marketing to summer day camp organizers and adult ESL instructors.
  • Link with community partners to represent the Museum at special events, such as Kingston’s First Capital Day, and collaborate with other local museums such as the Agnes Etherington Art Centre or the Miller Museum of Geology on a joint summer marketing campaign.
  • Gather and analyze data about numbers and origins of visitors, effectiveness of marketing methods and visitor satisfaction, interests and suggestions through the development and distribution of an online visitor satisfaction survey.
  • Keep detailed, accurate records of marketing and program/tour delivery statistics.
  • Welcome Museum visitors and program/tour participants.
  • Evaluate and suggest improvements to public programs and program marketing.

The Museum shows how Canadians have preserved health and managed disease, pain, and suffering. Required Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of French or other second language.
  • General knowledge of health care history and/or social history of Canada.
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of the principles of heritage interpretation.
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of event planning and marketing.
  • Graphic design skills and familiarity with Adobe Design Premium CS3.
  • Interest in a career in history, history of medicine, museology, education, heritage interpretation, tourism or other related discipline.
