CURING BOASTFULNESS

Today's over-the-counter medications don't make claims like those on the card below. Most often they only claim to relieve or reduce symptoms such as coughing, fevers, and indigestion.

What brought about the change?

The change began in response to some of the more outrageous claims of patent-medicine advertisers. Crusading journalists began to hire chemists to analyze patent medicines and publish the contents. They wrote scathing articles about dangerously misleading advertising that preyed on the fears of sick people and their families.

Some patent-medicine advertisers began to tone down their claims.
