Public Programs Assistant Position Available for Summer 2025

JOB TITLE: Public Programs Assistant x1  

SALARY: $17.20/hr

WORK HOURS: 7 hrs per day, 5 days per week (35 hrs/week). May 12 to 31, Monday to Friday. June 1 to August 31, Wednesday to Sunday.

START / END DATES: May 12 – August 31, 2025

INFORMATION

This is a temporary full-time position from May 12 to August 30, 2025. It is funded through the Young Canada Works program. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students who will be returning to full-time studies in the fall of 2025.

Working in collaboration with other Visitor Services staff, the Public Programs Assistant will focus on tasks as detailed below:

-Provide frontline guest services, including welcoming visitors, offering general information and wayfinding assistance, handling gift shop sales, and supporting museum upkeep.

- Deliver onsite educational programs for grades K-12, adults/seniors, and summer day camps.

- Conduct guided tours of the Museum of Health Care's galleries

- Conduct outdoor guided walking tours (1hr in duration) detailing health care history in the area,

including sites at Kingston General Hospital and Queen’s University

- Assist in the planning and delivery of events for adults such as lectures, and/or exhibit openings.

- Collaborate with community partners to represent the Museum at community events, such as Science Rendezvous and Princess Street Promenade, and collaborate with other member museums of the Kingston and Area Association of Museums, Art Galleries, and Historic Sites on professional development activities

- Conduct research into local, national, and international history of medicine and health care.

- Assist in the development of customized programs and tour opportunities for specific groups.

- Gather demographic data on museum visitors and their feedback

- Develop written content for the museum blog and newsletters.

- Keep detailed, accurate records of program/tour delivery statistics.

- Evaluate and suggest improvements to public programs, research resources, and program marketing.

SUPERVISION

This position is supervised by the Programming & Communications Coordinator. QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

-Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

- Excellent time management skills.

- Confidence in delivering presentations, tours, and educational programs to groups of varying sizes and ages.

- Ability to provide excellent visitor experience, respond to inquiries, and handle feedback professionally.

- Ability to work effectively with colleagues, volunteers, and community partners to develop and deliver programs.

- Ability to create welcoming and inclusive experiences for diverse audiences.

-Familiarity with Microsoft Office.

DESIRED:

-Knowledge of French or other second language.

-Knowledge and/or experience of Indigenous history

-General knowledge of health care history and/or social history of Canada.

-Experience in developing programs for different age groups.

-Experience in and/or knowledge of the principles of heritage interpretation.

-Experience in and/or knowledge of event planning -

-Interest in a career in history, history of medicine, museology, education, heritage interpretation, tourism or other related discipline.

Young Canada Works Eligibility

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);

  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;

  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;

  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;

  • have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and

  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.

  • Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCWHO employment program
